Kerry: Assad has not yet realized that his end is inevitable

US Secretary of State John Kerry called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. He was speaking on Wednesday during a joint press conference with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, who is the first foreign minister to meet Kerry since he took office.
Kerry said that Assad needs to abandon hopes of riding out the war and instead should accept the inevitability of his departure.

"We need to address the question of President Assad's calculation currently," he told reporters at the press conference. "I believe there are additional things that can be done to change his current perception."

"The preference of the administration is to make sure we have a political solution if at all possible, that is the preferable outcome here, that there be a negotiated solution, but that it would result in President Assad's departure, the president and I believe it is going to happen," said Kerry.

He also hinted that Washington and Amman could take renewed steps to urge Syrian ally Russia to put more pressure on Assad to quit. Kerry said that Jordan's King Abdullah II was expected to visit Moscow soon.
Judeh told reporters that him and Kerry had discussed a wide range of issues and exchanged ideas on key developments in the region, particularly the situation in Syria.
